Review

This was a fantastic book that I think is a must-read for anyone engaging in the current conversation around contemporary critical theory. The authors take such a thorough approach first by just defining what critical theory is using primary resources and then going on to offer a detailed critique of the various claims ultimately showing how it is incompatible with the Christian biblical worldview. While they are ultimately in opposition to contemporary critical theory, they are careful to challenge the Christian not to reject it wholesale but to engage with it and acknowledge where its claims align with the truth of the scripture.

Contemporary critical theory is very much the worldview of modern western society so it does the Christian well to understand it and be able to engage with it in an informed and thoughtful way. This book is without a doubt one that I will need to read over again to fully digest all the information and arguments presented.

Quotes Worth Keeping

“When you believe you are morally superior, when you have dehumanized those you disagree with, you can justify almost anything.” Chapter 14

“A Christian simply cannot walk into church each Sunday, look around and label people oppressor christian or oppressed christian based on nothing more than their inborn physical characteristics. This attitude flies directly in the face of New Testament teaching and makes a mockery of the unity that Jesus purchased for his people on the cross.” Chapter 9
